On May 8, 2018 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued an urgent public health advisory warning that the “Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing Foam” has been recalled and linked to an outbreak of bacterial infections across the country.
The product is contaminated with several species of bacteria from the Burkholderia cepacia complex or B. cepacia family.
The FDA has stated that it is currently investigating this issue further to determine whether any additional products or lots from the manufacturer may present a risk of infection to consumers.
Families Affected Should Be Outraged
The cleansing product is used in hospitals and home health care settings to cleanse people who are unable to shower or bathe after surgery or due to other health complications.
The problem is that many people who are exposed to this contaminated product are the last people that should come in contact with it.
Furthermore and according to the FDA, the instructions that accompany the product do not include directions to rinse the cleanser from the skin. This poses additional potential for the bacteria to come into contact with open wounds and to sicken the already recovering individual.
CDC Announces Multistate Outbreak
The CDC has reported 10 confirmed cases of infection linked directly to the Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing Foam product. The confirmed cases of Burkholderia cepacia complex or B. cepacia. The infected patients were from three states: California (2), Pennsylvania (7), and New Jersey (1). These patients were already hospitalized for acute conditions and acquired the infections while hospitalized.
Symptoms of B. cepacia Infection
When somebody becomes infected with a B. cepacia infection, the symptoms are varied. Some patients, might not show any signs of infection, while others become seriously ill. It is important to note that a bacterial or B. cepacia Infection can be life-threatening. Especially to those patients who are already recovering from surgery.
Symptoms of Burkholderia cepacia infection are similar to the symptoms you would experience with any other bacterial infection. These symptoms include cough, congestion, difficulty breathing and possibly fever. If someone develops “cepacia syndrome” the symptoms will be very severe and include a high fever.
