The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a multi-state investigation on a food poisoning outbreak from many pre-cut melon products. So far, 93 people have been infected with the Salmonella Carrau strain, resulting in 23 hospitalizations.
Caito Foods LLC issued a recall on its pre-cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and many pre-cut fruits containing the melon products. The melons were supplied from the company’s facility in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The products were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The pre-cut melons came in clear, plastic packaging. Both Caito Foods LLC and SpartanNash Company (a Caito distributor) supply the products to independent retailers and it is recommended you check the label information here.
Retailers include Amazon, Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, Walmart and Trader Joe’s. A full list can be found on the US Food and Drug Administration website here. “Because it is possible that products could still be on store shelves, this recall extends to both retailers and consumers,” the FDA notice said.
Salmonella can develop within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated melon. The side effects usually include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramping. Those with compromised immune systems, such as children or the elderly, are at risk of experiencing the worst of the symptoms.
Though many people recover within four to seven days, Salmonella can spread to the bloodstream and can cause bigger health complications.
Across nine state, 93 people have reported illness in association with the melons. The illnesses began anywhere from March 4, 2019 to March 31, 2019. Most of the people reported were over 50 years old.
