You’ve probably heard of the song “Burning Down the House” but these speakers may actually do that.
On May 21, ION Audio LLC recalled nearly 41,000 portable speakers from the market because they can explode and pose an injury hazard and/or property damage threat.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated the hazard occurs during charging time. “Hydrogen gas can leak from the portable speaker battery when charging and the speaker can burst..” the announcement said.
The models involved in the recall, with corresponding UPC numbers, are:
- Sport Express
0812715010911 - Keystone
0812715018139 - Cornerstone/Cornerstone Glow
0812715018078, 0812715018528, 0812715019976, or 0812715019969
There have been five reports of the speakers exploding that included property damage to the surrounding area. Although no injuries have been reported, it’s important to take safety precautions around the potentially dangerous speaker.
If you own one of these models, or know someone who does, please stop using it immediately. Do not charge it either.
The Sport Express model was sold exclusively at Best Buy from June 2018 to May 2019 for $70. It is a black speaker with knobs on the front and a blue lit clock.
Various electronics stores online and nationwide sold all three models from March 2016 to March 2019. The Cornerstone models are white and triangular in shape and sold for about $100. The Keystone has a white square casing with a gray center and sold for roughly $200.
