(May 23, 2019) What is Memorial Day without hamburgers? Apparently, it’s saving you a trip to the hospital as long as you don’t eat one.
Aurora Packing Company Inc. released a nationwide recall of its raw ground beef for possible E. coli contamination. The US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Wednesday that 62,112 lbs of the ground beef are potentially contaminated. The FSIS was made aware of the problem when random sampling flagged a potential contamination.
This recall includes multiple cuts of beef, such as neck bones, ribeye, brisket, chuck, and ribs. The products were packaged on April 19 and shipped across the country. The establishment number is “EST 788” and can be found inside the USDA mark of inspection.
So far, no one has reported any illness from consuming the suspect beef but we will update this article should further information be released. This strain of E. coli is known as O157:H7.
The symptoms of E. coli food poisoning typically present three to four days after consuming the product. Dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps are among the side effects. Children and elderly persons, or those with compromised immune systems, are at risk of experiencing the worst of the effects.
According to the USDA, children five and under, as well as adults, may be susceptible to a kidney syndrome from E. coli food poisoning. The warning signs are typically easy bruising, decreased urine output, and pallor.
Just last month, over 150 people in ten states were infected with E. coli strain “O103” after eating contaminated beef at home and in various restaurants.
