The Prestige brand manufactures a variety of pressure cooker sizes and styles for use on the stove. Some of them feature a non-stick interior, heat resistant handles, and inner or outer pressure lids.
The Prestige Smart Series five-piece stainless steel multi-cooker set was recalled in 2007 by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The importer, Manttra, Inc. of Virginia Beach, Va. recalled 38,250 units of the cookers due to reports of hot contents spilling and resulting in burn injuries to the users.
The problem was if the unit is not closed properly, the lid can separate from the base and allow hot contents to spill out. Pressure cookers can reach up to 200 degrees, so the possibility of burn injury poses a significant threat.
The particular set came with a pressure lid, glass lid, steamer basket, wire trivet, and stock/pressure pot. The model or code number 38270 can be found at the base of the 8-quart cooker. Those models were sold in major department stores nationwide from June 2003 to April 2007.
The company claims the lid cannot be opened until all of the pressure has been safely released. But in 2012, voluntarily recalled the lids of certain Smartplus stainless steel pressure cookers in the United Kingdom due to a fault with the pressure regulator.
The specific model number 57050 had been on sale since 2004, with date marks between January 2004 and February 2012.
Many people like to use pressure cookers because they are a quick and efficient way to prepare foods. Pressure cookers can make an assortment of foods and makes for easy cleanup. However, if any part of the device is compromised, it can build up pressure and the contents will explode.
In addition to property damage, pressure cookers have been known to cause:
- Severe burns
- Scalding
- Permanent scarring
- Disfigurement
- Hospitalization
- Skin graft surgery
Prestige is based out of India under Prestige TTK Limited and titles itself as the country’s largest kitchen appliance maker for over 50 years. The company has over 150 pressure cookers on its website, though not all of them are available in the United States.
