Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has recalled roughly 26,016 of its 2017-2018 Mirage G4’s due to an increased risk of injury in a crash.
The problem has been identified in the internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restrain System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU). It can misinterpret vibrations while driving such as poor road conditions or a flat tire, causing the sensor to disable all seven of the vehicle’s airbags.
Airbags that do not deploy in the event of a crash can cause serious injury or even death.
Owners may see the airbag warning light labeled SRS, which stands for supplemental restraint system, illuminate when this happens.
The G4 sedans were manufactured from March 24, 2016 to November 28, 2017. Mitsubishi began notifying customers of the recall by mail on May 24, 2019. Dealerships will update the vehicle software to keep the system “online” during rough road conditions.
The company filed documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about this issue last month and the results were published late May.
