On June 7, 2019 Kroger recalled certain frozen berries for a possible Hepatitis A health risk stemming from an FDA sampling.
The nationwide grocery store said it would be recalling certain Private Selection frozen berries.The Hepatitis A contamination concern stems from a Food and Drug Administration sample that tested the berries and were found to be contaminated with Hepatitis A.
The following products have been affected by the recall. Please check your product labeling to ensure you have not consumed these, or have them in your freezer.
- Triple Berry Medley in 48oz (BEST BY: 07-07-20; UPC: 0001111079120)
- Triple Berry Medley in 16oz sizes (BEST BY: 06-19-20; UPC: 0001111087808)
- Frozen Blackberries in 16oz packaging (BEST BY: 06-19-20, 07-02-20; UPC: 0001111087809)
Kroger is recalling the above mentioned frozen berry packs across the country. A customer notification system has been put in place by the company to alert those who may have purchased them.
Hepatitis A is a very contagious liver disease that people can contract from being exposed to the virus, including from food. The illness can bring on mild symptoms lasting a few weeks to a few months. The symptoms usually begin within 15 to 50 days of exposure and may cause fatigue, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, pale stools, and abdominal pain.
It’s important to note there is a Hepatitis A vaccination that can prevent illness, but only if it’s given within two weeks of exposure. As with any food poisoning or any other illness, those with compromised or weakened immune systems may be prone to liver failure from contracting Hepatitis A; though these cases are rare.
