Costco Frozen Berry Recall Lawsuit

Check your freezer for Kirland Signature Three Berry Blend. The frozen berry medley was recalled out of caution due to potential Hepatitis A contamination.

(June 25, 2019) A recent test conducted by the Food and Drug Administration indicated a frozen berry medley may be contaminated with Hepatitis A. They have since been recalled from all Costco stores they were sold at.

Townsend Farms, Inc. notified Costco of the potential food poisoning scare earlier in the month on June 11. According to the press release, Townsend Farms used a conventional blackberry to manufacture its frozen Kirkland Signature Three Berry Blend.

The blackberry is thought to be the culprit and echoes similarity to frozen berries sold at Kroger grocery stores. On June 7, Kroger announced a recall that its Private Selection tested positive for Hepatitis A during an FDA sampling.

The Townsend Farms frozen berry medley was sold with Best By dates between February 16, 2020 and May 4, 2010. The only stores that sold the product were in the San Diego and Los Angeles region, as well as parts of Hawaii. However, no products sold in Costco have tested positive for Hepatitis A and it is no longer listed in its inventory.

Below are the potentially affected 4 lbs bag products:

  • FEB1620,(A),(B),(C),(D),(E),(F),(G), or (H)
  • FEB1820,(A),(B),(C),or (D)
  • FEB2920,(A),(B),(C),or (D)

What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a very contagious liver disease that people can contract from being exposed to the virus, including from food. The illness can bring on mild symptoms lasting a few weeks to a few months. The symptoms usually begin within 15 to 50 days of exposure and may cause fatigue, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, pale stools, and abdominal pain.

It’s important to note there is a Hepatitis A vaccination that can prevent illness, but only if it’s given within two weeks of exposure. As with any food poisoning or any other illness, those with compromised or weakened immune systems may be prone to liver failure from contracting Hepatitis A; though these cases are rare.

Please consult your health care provider immediately if you’ve consumed any of the frozen berry medleys and became sick. If you own these berries, dispose of them immediately and contact the store for a refund.

Townsend Farms is a family-owned business that has been farming out of Oregon since 1906.
