On July 11, 2019 there was an E. coli outbreak at a Red Robin restaurant in Westminster, Colo. Three separate individuals, one adult and two children of no relation, all tested positive for the bacteria E. coli O157:H7 at the chain restaurant located at 779 W. 146th Ave.
According to a news release issued by the Tri-County Health Department, the three individuals each at the restaurant on different nights in late June. Two of them were hospitalized due to the food poisoning illness.
A food safety inspection was conducted which led to a citation of five critical health violations. Improper employee hand washing, improper cleaning and sanitizing of food preparation surfaces, and cross contamination between raw meat and other prepared foods were among the violations.
The source of the E. coli outbreak has not been identified, according to Ashley Richter, communicable disease epidemiology manager at the Tri-County Health Department.
“E. coli can be found in raw or undercooked meats, contaminated fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized milk or juice and in the stool of people who are infected,” she said.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are in collaboration with the agency as well.
The symptoms of E. coli begin 1-10 days after ingesting the bacteria. They include diarrhea, severe stomach pain, and sometimes fever and vomiting. Those with compromised immune systems, such as young children and elderly people, are at risk of experiencing the worst of E. coli side effects.
