3.3 Million Boppy Pillows Recalled (2021)
On September 23, 2021, The Boppy Company announced a recall of over 3 million Boppy pillow products. The announcement was made in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Why were the Boppy pillows recalled?
According to the CPSC, there have been eight reports of infant deaths associated with the Boppy Company Newborn Lounger and this hazard.
The infants reportedly suffocated after being placed on their back, side or stomach on the lounger and were found on their side or on their stomach.
The infant deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020.

Which Boppy products were recalled?
- Boppy Original Newborn Loungers,

- Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers
The defective Boppy products were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide and online, including Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Walmart and online at Amazon.com.

2019 Boppy Accessory Recall
(July 23, 2019) Over 14,000 Boppy infant head and neck support accessories used for infant swings, bouncers, and strollers were recalled from the consumer market.

be overstuffed which poses a suffocation hazard. Due to this, the infant’s head can be tilted too far forward, leading to breathing difficulties.
There have been three reports that caused the babies’ head to be pushed too far forward with their chin to their chest.
The accessory was sold in two different styles: Ebony Floral and Heather Gray, with model numbers 4150114 and 4150117. The model number can be located on the printed fabric label on the backside of the support device.
They were sold at Target, Buy Buy Baby, other children’s stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com from March 2019 to May 2019 for roughly $20.
This recall is similar to a major recall of infant sleeper devices from the entire US market in 2019. Both the Kids II and Fisher-Price have recalled millions of units of their inclined sleeping devices and accessories due to infant deaths and injury caused by the way they are designed. Fisher-Price recently recalled its infant sleeper accessory as well.
Update October 31, 2019 – The CPSC announced that a new study confirms babies should sleep on firm, flat surfaces.
The CPSC has so far received 1,108 incident reports related to inclined sleeping products that occurred between January 2005 and June 2019. Unfortunately, this number includes 73 infant deaths.
The agency hired a mechanical engineer who specializes in biomechanics as an independent expert to conduct the study. Erin Mannen, Ph.D works in this area at the Medical Sciences division of the University of Arkansas.
Dr. Mannen conducted infant testing in order to evaluate the design of inclined sleeping products. They performed the study by measuring muscle movements and oxygen saturation with infants who were placed in a variety of products and positions; flat crib, inclined crib, and several other inclined sleep products.
None of the inclined products tested were safe for infant sleep. The report concludes that products with inclines of 10 degrees or less, that are on flat and rigid surfaces, are most likely the safest for infant sleep. Additionally, plush-like sleeping surfaces pose a danger to infants.
