Volkswagen recalled 679,000 vehicles in the United States due to an electrical issue that could cause the car to roll away.
The affected cars are Jetta, Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Golf, Golf Sportwagon, and GTI models from 2011 to 2019. The recall only affects cars with an automatic transmission, a manual parking brake, and keyless entry.
The problem with the cars is that a driver could remove the key from the vehicle without putting the car in park. This would increase the chances of the car rolling away.
VW has said this happens because of a buildup of silicate on a shift lever micro switch. Volkswagen said its dealers will disable the micro switch on the affected cars and install an additional switch and circuit board to prevent a rollaway from happening.
So far there have been no reported injuries due to roll away VW vehicles.
