(August 28, 2019) Toyota Motors announced it would be recalling 191,000 vehicles in the United States and Japan due to Takata airbags working improperly. Certain 2003 to 2008 Corolla, and 2005 to 2008 Matrix vehicles are affected by the defective airbags.
The problem with Takata-brand airbags is they deploy with too much force, and have the tendency to send shrapnel in the direction of passengers and the driver. Our law firm is currently accepting new cases on those that were injured due to defective Takata airbags.
Additionally, some years of the Toyota Avalon were recalled due to the airbag not deploying in the event of an accident.
A spokesperson for Toyota said: “The involved vehicles are equipped with a front passenger airbag assembly containing an inflator … installed as a replacement under a prior recall.”
“There is a possibility that the airbag may not unfold as designed under high-temperature conditions, resulting in airbag internal pressure rising differently than expected.”
Toyota has not said if the airbags have been involved in any injuries. However, Takata airbags have been problematic in the past and linked to at least 24 deaths. In 2018, a Takata airbag exploded and killed a man in Arizona. For this reason alone, many automakers have been replacing the airbags over the years.
Toyota is offering to replace the airbags at no cost to owners of the affected vehicles.
