(Aug. 30, 2019) Ford announced it would be recalling over half a million trucks and SUVs from the North American market due to a seat back failure that may not restrain people in the event of a crash.

The recall involves 2018 to 2020 F-150 pickup trucks, 2019 and 2020 Super Duty trucks, 2018 and 2019 Explorer SUVs, 2019 and 2020 Expedition SUVs, 2020 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs.

All of these vehicles have both manual driver and front passenger seat-back recliner capabilities.

The problem with these trucks that puts both driver and passengers at risk of injury is they may not have a third pawl needed for seat strength. A pawl is the pivoted bar that allows the manual seat back motion.

The recall notice stated, “A seatback with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.”

Ford says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries that involved the seat back mechanism.
