General Mills announced it would be recalling five-pound bags of Gold Medal Unbleached All-Purpose Flour nationwide due to a potential E. coli outbreak.
The flours in question have a better if used by date of September 6, 2020. The E. coli O26 strain was discovered during routine sampling of the product. Though General Mills has not received any reports of confirmed illnesses from its flour, it is best to dispose of the flour or take it back to the original retailer for a refund.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, E. coli can be killed by heat through baking, frying, sauteing, or boiling products made with flour. The FDA, as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warn not to consume raw dough.
E. coli is a deadly bacteria that can cause a variety of issues such as bloody diarrhea or dehydration. Those with compromised immune systems, such as elderly persons or young children, are likely to experience the worst of E. coli side effects.
This year, there have been a handful of flour recalls from the consumer market (Pillsbury, King Arthur, Aldi). It’s important to practice safe hygiene when working in the kitchen, including frequent hand washing and cleaning all surfaces that came in contact with the food items.
The recall affects five-pound flour bags with package UPC number (016000 196100) and a Better If Used By date of 06SEP2020KC.
Contact your physician or health care provider immediately if there is concern you or your family may have contracted E. coli through the flour.
