With seven offices worldwide and sales of its products in 55 countries, Bodum is among the leading manufacturers of French press coffee makers. Further proof of Bodum’s success comes through its partnership with American coffee giant Starbucks, which has in the past sold Bodum presses in stores and on its website.
Not all of them were as well-designed as Bodum’s reputation might lead you to believe. In 2019, the company announced a recall through the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of a French press sold by Starbucks, citing the risk of a plunger piece that could break off, exposing a sharp metal rod.
Starbucks had sold more than 230,000 of the French press units by the time of the recall, which dated back to November 2016. Made in Portugal from recycle materials, the presses were branded “Bodum + Starbucks” and had a volume of eight cups.
The CPSC was aware of eight times the plunger had broken off during use by American consumers, causing laceration or puncture wounds. Owners of the recalled French press were advised to contact Starbucks for a full refund.
