In the 1940’s, Presto was the pressure cooker king. Long before the rise of electric models, Presto’s stovetop pressure cooker outsold its 11 closest competitors combined, according to a company history.
Those days are long gone, and in recent years electric pressure cookers have risen to prominence. Presto joined the growing field with an electric offering of its own, promising an easier process than the stovetop experience.
“Fast and easy,” Presto said on its website, “just set it and the rest is automatic.”
User safety was among the things Presto told customers not to worry about. Unfortunately, some have learned Presto made the same mistakes as many other electric pressure cooker manufacturers. Customers who’ve learned this the hard way have wound up in emergency rooms, while Presto has found itself the target of lawsuits.

Presto Pressure Cooker Explosions
On the company website, the Presto Electric Pressure Cooker Plus was marketed as safe for home use, with “eight built-in safety features.” Only one was spelled out in detail: “a cover locking system that allows pressure to build only when the cover is securely closed and prevents the cover from being opened until pressure is safely reduced.”
If that were true, Presto users would never have to worry about the pressurized and super-heated contents of their pressure cooker exploding and burning them.
In fact, numerous owners of Presto electric pressure cookers have suffered severe burns when the top exploded off and contents splashed onto them.
Presto Pressure Cooker Lawsuits
Johnson//Becker clients allege their injuries were caused by defective Presto pressure cookers, with lids that don’t lock under pressure as the company promised. A Presto pressure cooker with a defective lid is fast, easy and unsafe.
Presto pressure cookers come with “serious and dangerous defects,” according to one recent Johnson//Becker complaint. Presto “put profits ahead of safety,” the complaint continues, “by continuing to sell its pressure cookers to consumers, failing to warn said consumers of the serious risks posed by the defects, and failing to recall the dangerously defective pressure cookers regardless of the risk of significant injuries.”
To continue selling its defective pressure cookers, the complaint alleges, Presto “demonstrating a callous, reckless, willful, depraved indifference to the health, safety and welfare” of its own customers.
Presto Pressure Cooker Burn Injuries
Incidents caused by defective Presto pressure cookers have resulted in trips to the emergency room, doctor’s offices and a long road to recovery. Victims of faulty pressure cookers have endured extreme pain, both in the moment of explosion and long after the incident, and have lost time at work, socializing, and with their families.
