On Jan. 11, 2024, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Daikin Comfort Technologies’ evaporator coil drain pans due to fire hazards. This recall is an expansion of the July 28, 2022 recall.
According to the CPSC, the drain pans at the bottom of the evaporator coils can overheat, melt, and lead to a fire. Approximately 300,000 drain pans were recalled.
What products are included in the recall?
The recall includes coil drain pans on furnaces sold from January 2019 through November 2021, with coil serial numbers ranging from 1901 to 2101. An exception is made for Daikin, Goodman, or Amana-branded non-condensing furnace systems.
In the expanded recall notice, the serial number ranges also include specific prefixes ranging from 1811-1812 for both the condensing and non-condensing furnace systems.
Serial numbers may be on the evaporator coil or the case atop the installed furnace. Consumers can consult DCT’s model verification tool on their website.
The evaporator coil drain pan may have been purchased separately, as a replacement, or as part of a package including a furnace and coil, at a cost of between $200 and $1,200.
The expanded recall comes after 31 reports of fire related to evaporator coil drain pans. One incident reported smoke inhalation, and several reported significant fire and smoke damage to properties.
The CPSC advises customers to contact Daikin to confirm their furnace is affected by the recall and to schedule a repair.
