A manufacturer of residential elevators has issued a recall following the death of a child involving one of its elevators.
Custom Elevator is recalling certain elevators out of more than 15,000 installed in homes in the United States. According to the announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
“Young children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car door or gate if there is a hazardous gap between the doors and suffer serious injuries or death when the elevator is called to another floor.”
In 2021, a seven-year-old child died in such an incident in North Carolina.
The recalled elevators were sold from 2003 through August 2022, retailing for up to $25,000. Consumers who purchased a unit from Custom Elevator are instructed to keep young children away from the elevator and contact the company for information regarding the recall. Potential accidents can be prevented by the installation of “space guards,” which will be provided free of charge, plus installation assistance upon request.
