In December 2022, Polaris announced the recall of specific off-road vehicle models, citing the risk of burn hazards.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall specified that “a fuel leak can occur at the fuel pump assembly joint on the fuel tank in close proximity to a hot surface, posing a fire hazard.”
The recall affected about 600 RZR Pro XP 4 recreational off-road vehicles with the model years 2021 and 2022. The vehicles were sold between March 2021 and August 2022. The off-road vehicles were sold at Polaris dealerships nationwide.
As of August 2023, that number has risen to approximately 12,300 units affected by the recall.
Polaris received five reports of fuel leaks, resulting in one report of a fire. In August 2023, Polaris received three more reports of fuel leaks.
In September 2023, Polaris expanded the recall to include some 2024 vehicle models. According to the CPSC, the expanded recall was due to the passenger seat buckle potentially being separated from the frame, posing an injury risk to consumers.
On Nov. 9, 2023, the CPSC again expanded the recall to include additional RANGER models due to fire and crash hazards. According to the CPSC, the vehicle’s center brake line was improperly installed. As a result, the rear brake circuit could remain pressurized while the vehicle is running, causing the brakes to overheat and reduce braking ability.
Additional Polaris off-road vehicle models were recalled on Dec. 14, 2023, to include model years 2023-2024 Ranger XP Kinetic recreational off-road vehicles. According to the CPSC, this recall was issued due to the risk of deactivating the throttle if a user simultaneously presses the brake and throttle pedals. If the brake is released, the vehicle can move independently, leading to a crash and injury.
