Nova voluntarily recalled their Adult Bed Rails due to risk of entrapment and death by asphyxiation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the recall on their site on Dec. 22, 2022.
Why were the Nova Bed Rails recalled?
According to the CPSC, there is a serious risk of entrapment and death by asphyxiation if the user attaches this product to their bed. Users could be trapped within the rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress.
The CPSC did not report any known incidents involving the 20,000 units recalled. These products were manufactured at Bliss Health Products Co. Ltd., in China.
What is asphyxiation?
According to Web MD, asphyxiation is a life-threatening situation when the body does not acquire enough oxygen to prevent you from passing out.
Breathing normally means taking in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide from the lungs. Any disturbance to this process can cause someone to pass out or die.
What Bed Rail models have been recalled?
Officially known as Nova Medical Products Home Bed Rails, two models are included in this recall.
Each of the products should have a “BL” identifier at the beginning of the model numbers. The first product has model number 6093. The second model, titled Home Bed Rail with Legs, has model number 6094.
To determine if a consumer’s product is indeed recalled, they should inspect their product sticker, which is located on one of the white metal tubes. It should be on the left side if the consumer is facing the product.
Consumers should no longer use these bed rails. However, if they do not have a replacement bed rail, they should practice extreme caution when getting in and out of bed.
