According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the scooter’s brakes can fail, posing a risk of serious injury. The July 25, 2024 recall involves about 4,200 scooters. According to the CPSC, there have been at least 22 reports of the brakes failing, which has resulted in injuries, including abrasions, contusions, a dislocated shoulder, fractured teeth, lacerations, and strains. The CPSC warns consumers to stop using the scooters immediately.
Only scooters with the letters “WY” as the seventh and eighth letters in the serial number are included in the recall. The serial number can be found on a label located on the underside of the scooter. The scooters have two wheels, are matte black, and have kickstands. The Hover-1 logo is printed on the scooter in three places. The scooters were sold online at Walmart.com from November 2021 through July 2022 for about $200.
The attorneys at Johnson // Becker, PLLC successfully represented the families of two girls after an exploding hoverboard battery caused a house fire in Pennsylvania. Both girls passed away in March 2017 as a result of the house fire. These were the first reported deaths directly attributed to a malfunctioning hoverboard, though thousands of serious injuries have also been reported at the hands of the hugely popular transportation devices.
