Johnson//Becker, PLLC, Accounts for Almost 80% of All Pressure Cooker Lawsuits in the Country

It is known that cooking at high temperatures in a sealed environment (a pressure cooker) is a faster way to prepare food. A pot boils at 100° C / 212° F. Liquid in a pressure cooker boils at 125° C / 257° F. The increased temperature and high pressure allow for shorter cook times. Pressure cookers are widely popular, often perceived by consumers as safe, but that’s not always the reality. Since 2019, there have been over 300 pressure cooker lawsuits alleging dangerous defects and injuries.

Pressure cooker lawsuits filed by Johnson//Becker, PLLC, account for almost 80% of all pressure cooker lawsuits in the country. 92% of these pressure cooker injury cases are filed in federal court, as the Plaintiffs and Defendants live in different districts.

There are several reasons for the recent uptick in pressure cooker injury cases being filed. In a recent article,  Under Pressure: Inside a Growing Litigation Trend, Johnson//Becker, PLLC attorney Adam J. Kress stated, “One failure point is wear in the lid’s locking lugs and locking pin. Especially if the interlocking pieces are made of aluminum instead of stainless steel, repeated use can wear the mechanism such that the lid can be closed enough for the cooker to begin building up heat and pressure but not enough to engage the locking mechanism that prevents the lid opening while under pressure.” According to Mr. Kress, if a pressure cooker wears in this way, it is not compliant with the industry standards, and “can result in significant injuries to anyone near the pressure cooker.”

Another reason is the volume of the pressure cookers available on the market. According to Statista, in 2019, the retail sales of electric pressure cookers in the United States were $51.48 million.  Global events in 2020 created even more consumers cooking at home. Kansas State Research and Extension estimates pressure cookers are in 50% of homes in the United States. Karen Blakeslee stated, “70% of U.S. households are now the central food preparation spot for 80% of meals. In 2019, the same survey found that to be the case in 30% of American homes.” As more and more people are cooking from home, pressure cooker injuries are expected to continue to increase.
