What has been recalled?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Matrix-Brand Training Cycle’s adjustable seat can unexpectedly lower while in use, posing a fall hazard to the rider.
The January 30, 2025, recall includes about 13,000 Johnson Health Tech training cycles. The following model numbers are included in this recall: CXP-03, CXC-02, CXM-03, CXV, and CXM-02. The exercise bikes have adjustable seats and handlebars, an aluminum rear flywheel, and a magnetic resistance system. They have matte black steel frames, forged steel cranks, dual-sided SPD pedals, four leveling feet, and two transport wheels. “Matrix” is printed on the side of the bike.
The Matrix Training Cycles were sold primarily to commercial fitness facilities from January 2021 through October 2024.
Fitness Equipment Lawsuits and Recalls
There have been several instances involving the CPSC and Johnson Health Tech over the past 25 years.
Examples include:
- In 2022, 192,000 Horizon Fitness Inc. Treadmills were recalled; the CPSC alleged that they “can unexpectedly accelerate, change speed, or stop on their own.” Over 874 reports of the treadmills malfunctioning resulted in at least 71 injuries.
- Also in 2022, a Class Action lawsuit was filed against Horizon, alleging it misrepresented the horsepower of its treadmills.
- In 2015, Johnson Health Tech agreed to pay a $3 million civil penalty for failing to report defects in their fitness equipment, specifically the Matrix Fitness Ascent Trainers and Elliptical Trainers. The defect involved moisture buildup in the power sockets, posing a risk of short circuits and fires.
- In 2004, Johnson Health Tech and its subsidiary, Horizon Fitness Inc., agreed to pay a $500,000 penalty for failing to report incidents related to their treadmills.
