Why Are the Scales Being Recalled?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recalled digital kitchen scales violate the mandatory federal regulations for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries because the scale has a lithium coin battery that can be easily accessed by children. Button cell batteries pose an ingestion hazard to children. In addition, the CPSC noted that the kitchen scales come with a spare battery that is not in child-resistant packaging. The scales were also found not to have the proper warnings. This violates Reese’s Law, which is intended to prevent accidental ingestion of batteries, especially by children.
How Do I Know If My Kitchen Scale Is Recalled?
The January 30, 2025, recall involves about 350,000 Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales in the following models: 0480, 0455, 0456, 0458, 0473, 0479, 0481, 0747, 0748, 0749, 0751, 0752, and 0754. The scales are labeled with a sticker with the brand and model number printed on the back of the unit. The scales are gray, black, blue, green, pink, red, silver, and white. The products were sold online at Amazon.com, Walmart, and Greater Goods from May 2023 through September 2024 for about $10.
What Are the Dangers of Ingesting Button Cell Batteries?
Ingesting button cell batteries is extremely dangerous because they can get lodged in the esophagus and react with saliva, creating a chemical reaction that burns through tissue in as little as two hours, leading to severe internal injuries or death. This was the case for 18-month-old Reese Hamsmith, who passed away after ingesting a button cell battery in 2020.
