Swagtron SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter Electric Scooters Recall Lawsuit

Walmart’s Swagtron SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter Electric Scooters have been recalled. The lawyers at Johnson//Becker, PLLC, are accepting new cases for recalled products powered by lithium-ion batteries.

What is the Problem?

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the electric scooters’ lithium-ion batteries can overheat, smoke, melt, and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards. The CPSC’s February 20, 2025, recall warns consumers to immediately stop using the scooters at the “risk of serious injury and death.” According to the CPSC, there have been at least seven reports of the lithium-ion batteries malfunctioning, including at least one fire that resulted in a burn injury and substantial property damage.

How Do I Know if My Scooter is Part of the Recall?

The recall includes about 18,000 Swagtron SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter Electric Scooters, which were sold in black or silver colors. “SWAGGER 5” is printed on the stem of the handlebars. The following model numbers are included in the recall: SWGR5-V2-SLV, SWGR5-V2-2, SG5 Boost, SG-5S, 96262-2, 96262-9, and 96560-2. The model numbers are affixed to the side of the scooter deck. The Swagtron scooters were sold at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com and SamsClub.com from May 2018 through October 2024 for between $175 and $450.

What are the Potential Dangers with Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are very common today because they can store a great deal of energy in a small and lightweight package. If a lithium-ion battery is defective, damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme heat, it can overheat and trigger thermal runaway—a dangerous chain reaction where the battery rapidly heats up, releasing energy uncontrollably. This can lead to a fire or explosion.
