The Food and Drug Administration, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a Salmonella outbreak of packaged tuna.
So far, the tainted tuna has affected 13 people, including two hospitalizations. The last illness onset was reported on March 20, 2019.
Frozen ground tuna from Jensen Tuna was sourced back to JK Fish of Vietnam. Through its investigation, the CDC and state partners were able to identify the frozen tuna as the possible source of illness. The FDA then identified and traced individual cases back to Jensen Tuna of Louisiana.
On April 15, Jensen Tuna enacted a voluntary recall after discussions with the agencies. The tuna was sold in individually packaged, one-pound bags and sold in 20-pound boxes in Connecticut, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York and Washington. They can be found under lot number z266, z271, and z272.
“Jensen Tuna distributed product to all the states where ill people were reported, but recalled product might have been redistributed to additional states,” the CDC announcement said.
Individual restaurants and retailers should not supply, serve or sell the recalled tuna. Areas where tuna may have been stored or prepared should be washed and sanitized.
The FDA said it was unlikely the tuna was sold directly to customers. Rather, it was more than likely prepared by restaurants or retailers who use frozen ground tuna in their products.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can start anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated product. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
People at higher risk include children younger than five years old, pregnant women, adults older than 65 years old, and those with weakened immune systems.
