According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium-ion batteries in the recalled power banks can overheat, posing a fire hazard. There has been at least one report of the power banks catching fire and at least one incident resulting in a house fire.
The December 5, 2024, recall includes about 4,000 Belkin BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Chargers that have the model number BPD005. The model number can be found on the back of the power bank. The Belkin chargers were sold in black, and they have a white magnetic charger that can be used to charge smartwatches. “Belkin” is written in white on the front of the power banks.
Lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous because they can overheat, catch fire, or explode. This is known as thermal runaway. A thermal runaway occurs when the battery’s temperature rises quickly and uncontrollably. Johnson//Becker, PLLC, has successfully handled multiple cases involving lithium-ion batteries.
The recalled chargers were sold exclusively online at Amazon.com, Belkin.com, and other websites from May 2023 through June 2024 for about $100.
