On June 9, 2022, Brompton recalled thousands of electric bicycles sold in previous years after reports that their design led to serious crash and injury risks. The recall announcement, made through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers 16-inch wheel foldable Brompton e-bikes sold between May 2019 and March 2022.
Brompton E-Bike Recall Details
The e-bikes under recall have 16-inch wheels, and were sold under the model names Brompton Electric M2L, H2L, M6L, and H6L.
Retailing at up to $3,800, the Brompton bicycles were marketed as a perfect solution for urban cyclists looking for ease of storage and minimal theft risk. However, according to the recall, Brompton’s design included a mudguard that could become jammed by an object wedging against the front tire, causing sudden unexpected deceleration and crashes.
Brompton E-Bike Crash Injuries
At least 10 crashes have been reported due to the defective mudguards, causing nine injuries, including broken bones, chipped teeth, and head injuries, among others. At least two Brompton riders on since-recalled bicycles were hospitalized for their injuries.
Brompton agreed to recall a total of about 2,200 of its bicycles. Owners of recalled and defective bicycles are advised to contact the New York-based company for free repairs.
This is not Brompton’s first recall due to safety concerns. In 2017, it was forced to recall 8,400 of its bicycles because a bottom bracket could come dislodged during use, potentially causing an accident; in April 2021, Brompton recalled 600 bikes due to a software defect that could cause bikes to continue motoring after the cyclist had stopped pedaling.
