Gourmia Pressure Cooker Safety Claims

A 2015 YouTube video marketing the Gourmia pressure cooker started with a voiceover admitting that “pressure cooker” used to be the “two scariest words” to the home chef.

“We couldn’t help wondering,” the voiceover continues, “why, after all these years, nobody ever came up with a pressure cooker that was smart enough to take the pressure off the cook.”

It’s a bold claim, given that Gourmia was merely making its own entry into a burgeoning field of electric pressure cookers. The spokeswoman, “Beth the Chef,” assured viewers that Gourmia’s “whole new breed of intelligent pressure cookers” was special.

Beth explains: “It’s also safer, with almost a dozen safety features built into every part of the unit.” These and other features, she adds in closing, make the Gourmia pressure cookers “safer, smarter, and seriously better” than competitors.

Gourmia Pressure Cooker Explosions

Though the video skips specifics, in 2020, Gourmia’s website marketed its pressure cooker as having a “patented 12-level lid safety lock system.” Likewise, a Gourmia owner’s manual informed buyers flatly that “the lid cannot be opened until the pressure is fully released.”

Despite those claims, a woman suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” when her Gourmia pressure cooker lid opened while still under pressure, according to a subsequent lawsuit she filed with Johnson//Becker.

In that instance, the Complaint alleges the lid came off “during the normal, directed use of the pressure cooker, allowing its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker.”

Gourmia Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

In 2019, one day after she purchased her Gourmia ExpressPot pressure cooker, another woman prepared to use her new appliance by reading through its instructions and learning of its safety mechanisms. After preparing a recipe for barbecue chicken, the woman was still in her kitchen when suddenly she heard a loud “boom!”

She turned to see that her Gourmia cooker had exploded, untouched, spewing hot contents all over the kitchen. The woman was spared the worst because she was on the other side of an open refrigerator door, but still sustained second-degree burns to her shoulder and arm.

A recent Complaint filed by Johnson//Becker against Gourmia’s manufacturer, Steelstone Group, Inc., alleges the pressure cookers are “dangerously defective,” and that Gourmia knew or should have known its product was potentially unsafe.

The Complaint alleges that Gourmia “ignored and/or concealed its knowledge of these defects in its pressure cookers…in order to continue generating a profit from the sale of said pressure cookers, demonstrating a callous, reckless, willful, depraved indifference to the health, safety and welfare” of its own consumers.
