The recall involves Honda HRN216 and HRX217K6 lawnmowers, as well as GCV170/200 G5B general-purpose engines used in power washers and lawnmower replacement engines. The gas-powered walk-behind mowers are red and black with “HONDA” written on the grass-clipping collection bag. The model and serial number are printed on a label on the mower deck’s upper rear. The pressure washer engines are mounted on the frames. The engine’s serial number is engraved on a flat spot on the engine. The lawnmower replacement engines replace the existing ones on the Honda HRN216 and HRX217K6 mowers. The serial numbers for these are also printed on a flat spot on the engine.
The recall was announced on May 2, 2024. It involves about 200 replacement engines. Over 390,000 Honda engines were previously recalled in September 2023.
The CPSC warns consumers to immediately discontinue using these engines. Since the last recall, Honda has received almost 3,000 reports of incidents related to camshaft failures, including 38 reports of injuries.
The Honda engines were sold at Honda Power Equipment dealers, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, Northern Tool, and various farm, agricultural, and rental stores nationwide from May 2022 through June 2023 for between $550 and $1,100.
