What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium-ion batteries in the recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. The CPSC has received at least 19 reports of the product overheating or catching on fire, resulting in at least 10 injuries. The CPSC warns consumers to stop using the MagSafe Wireless Portable Power Banks immediately.
What is Thermal Runaway?
Lithium-ion batteries are popular due to their high energy density, which enables them to store a significant amount of power in a compact, lightweight package. Thermal runaway is a chain reaction in which a lithium-ion battery cell overheats, causing it to release energy rapidly and potentially ignite or explode. This can happen due to overcharging, physical damage, or internal short circuits, making lithium-ion batteries potentially dangerous.
