Continued sale of recalled Rock ‘n Play baby sleepers
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Fisher Price’s Rock ‘n Play baby sleepers were recalled in April 2019, due to approximately 30 deaths linked to the product. After the first recall, 70 deaths were reported to the agency. However, an additional eight deaths still occurred after the recall, instituting a second recall in January 2023.
Now, four years after the initial recall, circulation of Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play baby sleepers show no sign of slowing. The sleepers aren’t being sold in stores anymore, but from resellers such as Facebook Marketplace.
The CPSC found nearly 4,000 Fisher Price recalled sleepers on resale sites, primarily Facebook Marketplace. The agency is now urging Facebook to take action against resellers posting the recalled baby sleepers.
It is illegal to sell a recalled product, according to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. Facebook’s commerce policy states that the company prohibits the sale of recalled goods, though the social media platform is only a medium between buyer and seller.
The danger of baby sleepers
According to the CPSC, the Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play baby sleepers pose a serious risk of suffocation, injury and death to infants. Infants could roll from their backs to their stomachs while unrestrained.
A CPSC-commissioned study reported that an incline greater than 10 degrees is unsafe for infants due to the increased risk of suffocation. The Rock n’ Play baby sleepers are designed at a 30-degree angle.
On May 16, 2022, President Joe Biden signed into law the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, outlawing the sale of crib bumpers and inclined sleepers.
The CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop using the Rock ‘n Play baby sleepers and destroy these products.
