Saje Natural Wellness issued a recall of its 8.5 ounce (Product SKU No. 700552) and 1.7 ounce (Product SKU No. 700561) products last week due to a contamination of Psuedomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Both products come from Lot No. 814020. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall on July 6.
Saje Natural Wellness first introduced its first-ever line of baby and maternity products in May 2018. The company prides itself on using natural products that are both non-toxic, hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. The pathogen was discovered during routine testing and a recall was immediately announced. So far, there have only been three cases reported that showed up as a skin reaction (allergic rash and itching).
Potential Side Effects of Contaminated Splish Splash
The bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen that causes infection and bacterial infection in the blood. It is dangerous for those with compromised immune systems. A pathogen is a type of microorganism that causes disease.
Side effects include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Muscle
- Joint pain
- Confusion
- Shock
- Ear aches
- Skin rash, redness, or irritation
Though the product line puts young children at risk, those bathing the child are susceptible to infection as well, especially if their immune systems are compromised. The bacterial infection is considered “opportunistic” because certain conditions can increase the severity of the infection.
Those with the following conditions may experience a risk of infection:
- burn wounds
- receiving chemotherapy for cancer
- cystic fibrosis
- HIV or AIDS
- presence of a foreign body, like a mechanical ventilator or catheter
- undergoing an invasive procedure, like a surgery
Kiara LeBlanc, chief product and creative officer for Saje Natural, said in an online statement, “On behalf of Saje, I wholeheartedly apologize for potentially putting you or your loved ones at risk.”
The company indicated that only Splish Splash products are affected but will continue to regularly test its other products to ensure safety.
Consumers who believe they or their child may have experienced adverse reactions are advised to immediately contact their doctor.
