What are Auto Belays?
Auto belays are used in indoor climbing gyms or training areas to allow climbers to climb independently by automatically taking up the slack in the rope and controlling their descent. They work by using a braking system, such as centrifugal force or magnets, that smoothly lowers the climber when they let go or fall.
What is the Problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recalled auto belay device can fail to retract, posing a fall hazard and risk of serious injury or death. The CPSC has received at least 109 reports of the belays not functioning correctly, including at least one involving a serious injury. The CPSC warns consumers to stop using the TRUBLUE iQ and TRUBLUE iQ+ auto-belay devices immediately.
