On Dec. 28, 2023, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Walmart’s Relax 5mm Science Kit with large hematite magnetic balls due to violation of federal safety standards regarding magnet regulation.
According to the CPSC, the science kit with the magnetic balls contains one or more magnets that can fit within the CPSC’s small parts cylinder and are stronger than permitted. If these magnetic balls are swallowed, the magnets can attract one another or another metal object and become dislodged in the digestive system. As a result, children can suffer rips, cuts, gaps, twisting, or blocking of the intestines, leading to infection, blood poisoning, and death.
The CPSC is aware of over 2,000 magnet ingestions treated in emergency rooms from 2017 through 2021, including seven deaths.
The recall affects the Relax 5mm science kit with large hematite magnetic stones building blocks, which are sold in a set of 216 multi-colored magnetic balls. Approximately 4,240 magnetic ball science kits have been recalled.
The CPSC advises consumers to stop using the recalled magnetic balls science kits immediately and to keep them away from children.
